Gift Giving

Jul 9, 06:01 AM

It was my birthday yesterday. It reminded me of something I have meaning to do for a while. It was supposed to be a two-pronged plan:

  1. Create a website listing things I would like for Birthdays and Christmas-es
  2. Create a website to showcase those things that I had bought with vouchers (or cash) that people have given me for My Birthday or Christmas-es

The thinking was: A) I am useless at thinking of gifts for people on these two occasions, and can only assume that I am not alone and; B) I love receiving vouchers (especially for The Warehouse) but many people see this as a “cop-out” gift.

Seeing as My Birthday has just passed, step one above can wait until Christmas 2008, however I’m going to kick off step two today.

I have thought about it, and there are a couple of reasons I can think of that people might see vouchers as a cop-out gift:

  1. People assume that the recipient might think the gift-giver had put no thought into the gift giving process.
  2. Vouchers are a bit of “black-hole gift”. The gift-giver has no idea what they actually got the recipient. I can see how this would make people uncomfortable.

I will address point one in a separate post but point two needs to be addressed in a slightly different way. So starting today, people can visit the Gift Horizon section of my site to see what I have bought with the vouchers or cash that I have been given as gifts.
